PORTLAND, Ore.  –  The reigning conference champion can add another title to his resume as Simon Fraser’s Michael Crisologo has been named the 2024 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Year to lead the GNAC’s all-conference selections.

The senior from Richmond, B.C., is the sixth Red Leaf to earn the honor after a season where he leads the conference with an average of 72 strokes per round. Crisologo is the first golfer from Simon Fraser to earn the honor since his older brother, Chris Crisologo was named the GNAC Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons from 2016-18.

The younger Crisologo wrote his name into GNAC history last week when he claimed medalist honors at the GNAC Championships in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with a three-round score of 13-under-par 200 (67-65-68), just one stroke shy of matching the best score in tournament history. Crisologo was imperious on the way to victory shooting under par in every round and recording a tournament-leading 18 birdies across both days.

Crisologo is joined on the all-conference first team by Freshman of the Year Denby Carswell. The Burnaby, B.C., native has made an immediate impression around the conference in his first collegiate season, ranking second in the league only to Crisologo with an average of 72.3 strokes per round through eight tournaments. Carswell has earned three top-10 finishes this season and tied for 12th at the GNAC Championships with a two-day score of 3-over-par 216 (73-72-71). He is the fifth Red Leaf to be named Newcomer of the Year and the first since Bailey Bjornson earned the honor in 2022.

Conference champion Western Washington leads the GNAC with a trio of first-team selections in juniors Ryan Ho and Seth King and sophomore Peter Dionne-Yahr. Ho made headlines at the conference championships a week ago as he shot a  9-under-par 62 in his opening round to smash the tournament record and sit the all-time GNAC single-round record on the way to a third-place finish with a 6-under-par 207 (62-71-74). On the season, Ho leads the team and ranks fourth in the GNAC with a 72.6 stroke average.

King and Dionner-Yahr have also enjoyed strong seasons on the links for WWU as they rank fifth and sixth in the conference, respectively, with stroke averages of 72.9. and 73. Both players have notched three top-10 results this season, with their latest coming at the GNAC Championships. Dionne-Yahr took fourth in Coeur d’Alene with a three-round score of 5-under-par 208 (67-72-69) while King tied for sixth with a score of 3-under-par 210 (72-71-67).

Western Washington head coach Luke Bennett was voted by his peers as the Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to their conference-record 11th GNAC Championships title with a three-round score of 14-under-par 838 (273-287-278). The honor is the sixth of Bennett’s career and draws him level with former stalwart of the program Steve Card for the most in conference history. As a program, Western Washington has claimed 12 Coach of the Year honors, with Bennett’s latest his third in a row.

Montana State Billings’ Liam O’Halloran was named to the first team after a season where he led the Yellowjackets and ranked ninth in the conference with an average of 73.5 strokes per round. O’Halloran was one of MSUB’s top golfers in Coeur d’Alene, finishing at the GNAC Championships with a two-day score of 1-under-par 212 (70-75-67). On the season, O’Halloran notched four top-10 results, including two top-five finishes.

The Yellowjackets’ Lucas Howell was named the Newcomer of the Year after a debut season with MSUB where he ranked fifth on the team with stroke average of 74.3. Howell picked up three top-10 finishes this season, including a pair of top-five results. He is the third Yellowjacket to receive the honor and the first since Austin Westphal in 2014.

Northwest Nazarene’s Grayson Giboney, the conference’s only individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships also makes an appearance on the first team. Then senior from Mukilteo, Wash., has been among the best in the conference since the first tee-off, claiming two GNAC Player of the Week honors en route to compiling a 72.6 stroke average that leads the Nighthawks and ranks third in the conference. Giboney finished runner-up at the GNAC Championships last week, carding a score of 8-under-par 205 (68-64-73) to give him three top-five finishes heading into the NCAA West Regional.

Saint Martin’s Max Turnquist makes it all five programs with at least one first-team selection as he represents the Saints for a second year in a row and third overall. Turnquist finished his final season leading SMU and ranking seventh in the conference with a 73.2 stroke average. The Yakima, Wash., native earned three top-10 results this season, including a ninth place at the GNAC Championships where carded a three-round score of 2-under-par 211 (69-69-73).
