PORTLAND, Ore. –
Hannah Hair of Seattle Pacific passed Kayleigh Harper (WWU, 2015-19) last week for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time total blocks record, upping her mark to 598 to headline the latest conference action.
The reigning GNAC Player of the Year and GNAC Defensive Player of the Year achieved the milestone on Saturday in the Falcons’ five-set loss at Alaska Fairbanks. "It was exciting and it's definitely a huge honor," Hair said via a press release from SPU. "I think it speaks a ton to our team in general. We have trained to have a really high-level defense. Our current coaches and our coaches in the past like (former SPU assistant) Lindsey Calvin have helped me a ton in the way I block. It speaks to their ability to train us hard in the gym and I'm very grateful for that."
Simon Fraser meanwhile kept its nose in front in the 2024 title race, extending its winning streak to nine matches. With six matches left in the regular season, the Red Leafs are 11-1 (15-4 overall) and hold a one-game lead over second-place Central Washington (12-6, 10-2 GNAC). The two title contenders are scheduled for a Nov. 16 date in Burnaby, B.C., that could end up determining the 2024 GNAC regular season champion. CWU, the preseason favorite, is in search of its first GNAC crown since back-to-back titles in 2004-05. Simon Fraser, picked fourth in the preseason coaches poll, is on the hunt for its first-ever GNAC volleyball trophy.
The Alaska Nanooks (17-6, 9-4) did everything they could to stay in the title conversation as well, winning both matches last week and extending their winning streak to five. With five matches left on their schedule, the Nanooks sit two games back of the Red Leafs in the win column.

The first set of NCAA regional rankings will be unveiled Wednesday, listing each region’s top-10 teams in alphabetical order only. The first numerical list that will rank the teams 1-through-10 will be released Nov. 13 and each ensuing week for the remainder of the regular season. The NCAA volleyball selection show, which will reveal the eight-team field for the NCAA West Region Championships, is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25 at 4:30 p.m. (PT) and will be streamed live on
www.ncaa.com. The GNAC regular-season champion earns an automatic berth into the regional championship.
SFU DISPLAYING DOMINANCE: Simon Fraser’s only conference loss this season was a 3-0 setback against Western Washington on Sept. 27. Aside from that, no GNAC team has taken more than a single set off SFU as it has swept or won 3-1 in all 11 of its conference victories this fall. The Red Leafs avenged their defeat with a 3-1 win over WWU two weeks ago, and are coming off a sweep of Saint Martin’s and a 3-1 triumph over Western Oregon last week. SFU hits the road to face Seattle Pacific (6-15, 6-7) on Thursday (7 p.m. PT) and Montana State Billings (7-16, 0-13) on Saturday (Noon MT).
Senior
Brooke Dexter earned her second GNAC Offensive Player of the Week this season and sixth of her career last week, propelling her team to two more victories. The senior lefty leads the conference with 4.00 kills per set and 4.74 points per set and is in the top-25 in GNAC history with 1,213 career kills. Fellow senior
Davida Hill has continued her breakout campaign, ranking fourth in the conference with 3.19 kills per set and ninth in the league with a hitting percentage of .270. Setter
Eva Person leads the GNAC with 8.88 assists per set and ranks seventh in the conference with a team-best 0.43 aces per set.
Ezawa Malish is second in the league with 1.13 blocks per set and libero
Macyn Unger ranks third in the conference with 4.63 digs per set.

NICHOLSON PAVILION OF CENTRAL FOCUS THIS WEEK: A pivotal match in the 2024 GNAC title race is scheduled for Saturday at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Wash., when the second-place Wildcats host the third-place Nanooks (1 p.m. PT). If the Nanooks can pull off the upset road victory, they could tie or leapfrog the Wildcats in the conference standings. If the Wildcats successfully defend their home court, they would significantly dampen the Nanooks’ hopes for a GNAC title. CWU claimed a 3-0 victory when the teams met on Oct. 10 in Fairbanks. The Wildcats open their weekend on Thursday night against Alaska Anchorage (13-10, 7-6) at 7 p.m. (PT).
Coming off a 3-1 win over Northwest Nazarene in its lone match last week, the Wildcats are set to make a title push across the final six matches of the season. Senior
Emma Daoud-Hebert leads the GNAC and ranks second nationally with a hitting percentage of .446 and is coming off a 13-kill performance in the win over the Nighthawks. The reigning All-American is posing a legitimate threat towards the GNAC single-season hitting percentage record of .425, set by Western Oregon’s Krissi Kemper in 2012. She also climbed one spot on the GNAC career total blocks list, moving up to No. 7 in GNAC history. Fellow senior
Hannah Stires is approaching the top-10 in GNAC history in career digs, moving up to No. 11 last week with 1,828 digs in her time as a Wildcat. Stires leads the GNAC with 5.53 digs per set this fall.
Marianna Payne ranks third in the conference with 3.30 kills per set, and
Ellie Marble is 11th with 2.63 kills per set. Freshman setter
Kayleigh-Shay Chang ranks fourth in the conference with 6.91 assists per set, and
Morgan Halady is sixth in blocks per set with a team-best 1.09.

NANOOKS LOOK TO KEEP WINNING: Winners of five straight, the Alaska Nanooks will have their full focus on Thursday’s 7 p.m. (MT) match at Northwest Nazarene (7-13, 4-8) as they look to keep pace in the top portion of the GNAC standings. The Nighthawks were the last team to beat the Nanooks, handing them a five-set loss on Oct. 12 in Fairbanks. Alaska held serve at home last week, sweeping Montana State Billings before outlasting the reigning GNAC champion Falcons in five sets.
Senior
Karli Nielson has produced her best collegiate season yet, ranking second in the conference with 3.47 kills per set and 10th with a hitting percentage of .266. Nielson was the second player in the conference this season to reach the 1,000-career kills mark, and enters the week with 1,138 during her tenure in Alaska. Setter
Ainsley Smith is second in the league with 8.26 assists per set while
Elizabeth Jackson and
Josie Jansen rank fourth and fifth in the league with 1.11 blocks per set and 1.09 blocks per set, respectively. Freshman libero

VIKS LOOK TO BUILD OFF WINS: Coming off a pair of victories last week, Western Washington (9-9, 8-4) is set to hit the road facing Montana State Billings on Thursday (7 p.m. MT) and Seattle Pacific on Saturday (1 p.m. PT). The Vikings handled Western Oregon 3-1 and Saint Martin’s 3-0 on their home floor last week, keeping themselves in the upper half of the conference standings in fourth place. Junior
Devyn Oestreich leads the team with 2.66 kills per set and 3.44 digs per set, ranking ninth in the league in both categories. She is also second in the conference with 0.53 service aces per set.
Delaney Speer is second on the squad with 2.43 kills per set while chipping in 3.15 digs per set on the defensive end.
Emily Vossenkuhl leads the team at the net, ranking eighth in the league with 1.05 blocks per set.

SEAWOLVES SET FOR FINAL ROAD MATCHES: Playing its final two road matches of the season this week, Alaska Anchorage opens at Central Washington Thursday (7 p.m. PT) and plays at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday (1 p.m. MT). The Seawolves have kept themselves in the top half of the GNAC standings with solid play of late, winning their last nine sets amid their current three-match winning streak. UAA swept both Seattle Pacific and Montana State Billings on its home floor last week and enters this week in fifth place in the GNAC at 13-10 overall and 7-6 in league play.
Tia Allen leads the team with 2.25 kills per set and ranks second on the squad with 2.92 digs per set.
Madison Galloway is fifth in the league with 4.01 digs per set, and
Leilani Elder is third in the GNAC with 1.11 blocks per set.

FALCONS FOCUS ON FINAL FIVE: As Seattle Pacific’s hopes for a repeat conference title have faded, the team will shift its focus to its final five matches of the 2024 campaign. SPU hosts GNAC-leading Simon Fraser on Thursday night (7 p.m. PT) and Western Washington on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m. PT). The Falcons were swept by the Seawolves last Saturday before a tough five-set loss against the Nanooks last Saturday in Alaska. Hair led Division II volleyball with 1.63 blocks per set last season – the second-highest mark in GNAC single-season history. She enters this week at 1.51 blocks per set, ranking her second nationally behind Jada Suguturaga of Augusta (1.52 blocks/set), and is the national leader with 127 total blocks. She has a chance to become only the second player in GNAC history to lead the nation in a statistical category in consecutive years, after WWU’s Courtney Schneider led Division II in digs per set in 2006 (7.66) and 2007 (7.74). Fellow senior
Allison Wilks ranks third in the conference with a hitting percentage of .354, while
Sydney Perry leads the team with 2.49 kills per set. Senior setter
Emily Tulino has been on top of her game recently, climbing to No. 3 in the conference with 7.65 assists per set. Her 61 helpers in Saturday’s match against the Nanooks were the most by a GNAC player since the 2022 campaign.

Nov. 4 GNAC Volleyball Players of the Week
VOLLEYBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brooke Dexter – Simon Fraser University
Sixth-career player of the week, second this season.
Dexter helped the GNAC-leading Red Leafs extend their winning streak to nine matches, with a sweep of Saint Martin’s and a 3-1 triumph over Western Oregon. The senior from Anchorage, Alaska, led all GNAC players last week with 4.86 points per set, putting together a comprehensive performance on both sides of the ball. Dexter kicked off her week with 10 kills and three service aces against the Saints, while matching her season high with five block assists. She followed by completing her seventh double-double of the season against the Wolves, finishing with 15 kills, 11 digs and three block assists. Overall on the week Dexter averaged 3.57 kills per set on .317 hitting while adding 1.14 blocks per set and 0.71 service aces per set. Dexter leads the GNAC with 4.00 kills per set and ranks sixth in the league with a hitting percentage of .307. Her 1,213 career kills are the most of any active GNAC player and rank her 24th all-time in the conference.
SFU Head Coach Gina Schmidt: “Both wins this weekend were a full team effort. We’ve talked a lot this fall about the importance of consistency and Brooke has demonstrated that all season long. She obviously plays a big role in our offense, but she also makes key contributions serving, blocking and defending as well.”
Also Nominated: Kadyn Osborne, Alaska Anchorage; Karli Nielson, Alaska Fairbanks; Emma Daoud-Hebert, Central Washington; Jordin Taulua, Montana State Billings; Emily Tulino, Seattle Pacific; Maela Honma, Western Oregon; Janelle Grant, Western Washington.
VOLLEYBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hannah Hair – Seattle Pacific University
10th-career player of the week, second this season.
Hair etched her name into GNAC history, breaking the all-time blocks record in last week’s five-set loss against Alaska on the road. The fifth year from Walla Walla, Wash., finished one off her season high with nine total blocks in Thursday’s match at Alaska Anchorage, before adding four more total blocks and 10 kills against the Nanooks. Hair climbed to No. 1 in Division II volleyball with 127 total blocks and ranks second nationally with 1.51 blocks per set. Hair’s career mark of 1.38 blocks per set is second in GNAC history. Hair’s 10-career player of the week awards are tied for second most in conference history.
SPU Head Coach Jason Rhine: “Hannah is a special player and teammate precisely because she gives so much of herself to the team. While she is a defensive leader on the court, she also leads by doing the little things like taking the water coolers back after practice or helping prepare devotions and reflections for the team on game days. Hannah’s attitude and effort have gained her the respect of her teammates and coaches, as well as many opponents and coaches around the league. It is awesome that those traits also led her to individual achievement of the GNAC blocking record. Hopefully that name in the record books will help our program and the GNAC continue to be inspired for years to come, by who Hannah is and what she has accomplished on and off the court.”
Also Nominated: Madison Galloway, Alaska Anchorage; Rilee White, Alaska Fairbanks; Ellie Marble, Central Washington; Christine Funk, Montana State Billings; Macyn Unger, Simon Fraser; Delaney Speer, Western Washington.
