It was a historic selection for the Alaska Nanooks, who will make their first-ever NCAA regional appearance in volleyball. The Nanooks defeated their rival Seawolves in each of the two regular-season meetings between the teams, winning both matches by a score of 3-1. Both teams went 14-4 in league play and 23-5 overall during the regular season.
The other match between GNAC teams will feature the Wildcats of Central Washington against the Red Leafs of Simon Fraser. Fresh off a five-set affair on Saturday that ultimately determined a four-way tie for first place in the GNAC standings, SFU will look to repeat its victory. The Wildcats on the other hand will fondly remember their five-set win over the Red Leafs on Sept. 18, as the sides split their regular-season matches. SFU finished with a record of 20-4 while CWU went 18-7 overall in the regular season.
Western Washington will also represent the conference, taking on No. 3 seed Fresno Pacific in the opening round. WWU went 19-6 overall and 13-5 in conference play to take fifth place.
It marked the second time since the GNAC was formed in 2001 that it had five representatives at the regional, with the other occurrence being in 2016. The conference also had 4 of 8 regional teams in 2014, 2017 and 2021.
The 2025 NCAA Volleyball Championships are Dec. 11-13 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. Each of the eight regional champions will converge to square off for the 2025 national title.
