Wildcats’ run ends in Sweet 16 w/70-47 loss to CSU Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. – A memorable run to the Sweet 16 for the Central Washington women’s basketball team came to a close on Monday night at the Torodome, as No. 1 seed and host Cal State Dominguez Hills rolled to a 70-47 victory in the 2025 NCAA West Region Championships title game.
 
The Toros (34-1) led 11-0 five minutes into the game and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the night to emphatically stamp their ticket to the Elite Eight. The Wildcats’ season came to a close with a record of 23-8, after they tied for second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. Monday marked their lowest-scoring game of the season.
 
GNAC Player of the Year Sunny Huerta scored 20 points on three 3-pointers and an 11-for-12 mark from the free-throw line, while leading her team with five assists and adding six rebounds. The fourth-year Wildcat upped her career scoring total to 1,960 points, surpassing Simon Fraser’s Erin Chambers for No. 2 in GNAC history.

The Toros’ Nala Williams led her squad with 19 points, six assists, six steals and six rebounds to highlight the regional title game stat sheet. Asia Jordan made 8 of 11 field goals on her way to 17 points, and Cristina Jones just missed a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points. CSUDH out-rebounded CWU 35-29 and forced the Wildcats to commit 23 turnovers.
 
On a slow offensive night, the Wildcats shot 29.3% (12-for-41) overall but hit at a solid clip of 47.1% (8-for-17) from long range and made 15 of 18 free throws (83.3%). First-team all-GNAC guard Asher Cai finished with six points and four rebounds and honorable mention forward Capri Sims had a team-best seven rebounds and five points.
 
By halftime the Toros had built a 46-20 advantage as they came out of the gates with their foot on the gas and never let up. The Wildcats finished the game out-scoring the Toros 17-10 in the fourth quarter, but by then a comeback was well out of reach. Overall on the night CSU Dominguez Hills shot 45.0% (27-for-60), made 6 of 15 threes (40.0%) and made 10 of 12 free throws (83.3%).
 
In addition to finishing second on the GNAC all-time scoring list, Huerta broke the conference career records for field goals made with 714, field goal attempts with 1,641 and minutes played with 4,258. Her 3-point field-goal percentage of 42.4% ranked fifth in conference history, her 414 assists were 14th most, 116 games started were fifth most and 211 made threes were 15th most.
