BURNABY, B.C. – Trevor Van Hoof has been appointed the Head Coach, Men's Golf at Simon Fraser University. He will succeed Krysta Schaus, who resigned her position to take an opportunity in Toronto.

"Championships are not built by talent alone – they are built by culture, discipline, and belief," said Van Hoof. "I am honoured to lead this program and committed to helping our student-athletes grow as competitors, teammates, and men."

Van Hoof joined SFU as the fulltime assistant coach for both Red Leafs golf teams for the 2025-26 season, and enjoyed great success.

The SFU men won two tournaments this season, earning top spot at the Saint Martin's Bishop Invitational in DuPont, Wash., and the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Wash., both in September.

The Red Leafs placed third at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and advanced to the NCAA West/South Central Region Championship in Stockton, Calif., earlier this month, where they finished 14th. Earlier this month, redshirt junior Denby Carswell of Burnaby, B.C., was named to the NCAA Division II PING All-West Region Team.

The SFU women's team won the Saint Martin's Grisham Memorial Shootout in DuPont, Wash., in September and added to its dynastic run by claiming its fourth straight GNAC title in April. The Red Leafs capped off their season with a 10th-place result at the NCAA West Region Championship in Pueblo, Colo, at the beginning of the month.

"We're excited for Trevor to lead our men's program in its final NCAA season," said Breanne Watson, SFU Associate Director, Athletics "Not only does Trevor understand the landscape, but he's developed strong relationships with our male athletes, and are confident he can build on the success of last season."

Schaus will depart SFU this week, after two triumphant seasons as the head coach of the men's and women's golf teams. She guided SFU to two GNAC women's team championships and was recognized as the conference's Women's Coach of the Year in both seasons.

"A massive thank you to Krysta," said Watson. "She has had incredible success in such a short timeframe at SFU. Not only is Krysta a great coach, but she's been quiet leader in the department during a challenging period of change. We will miss her but has left the golf program in great form - and know she will excel at her next stop in Toronto."

The Red Leafs men's team captured the 2025 GNAC title under Schaus, who was honoured as the Men's Coach of the Year that same season.

Both teams qualified for their respective NCAA regional tournaments in every year Schaus was head coach. SFU golf had 19 all-GNAC selections, and two major player award wins over the last two seasons.

"I am incredibly grateful for my three years at SFU," said Schaus. "Leading an NCAA golf program had been a goal of mine for many years, and having the opportunity to do so was truly a dream come true. While the victories and accomplishments along the way will always be memorable, what I will cherish most is the opportunity to work with such an outstanding group of student-athletes.

"My goal was to build high-performance programs where strong habits, accountability, and competitive excellence were expected, while creating an environment where students genuinely enjoyed coming to practice each day. As SFU Golf enters its final year in the NCAA, I am confident the programs are positioned for continued success. The culture, standards, and people within the program provide a strong foundation for the future, and I look forward to watching the student-athletes make the most of every opportunity that lies ahead."

Schaus says the SFU men's team is in a strong position for the 2026-27 season with Van Hoof leading the way.

"With a talented roster of returning players and incoming freshmen, Trevor provides valuable continuity and leadership at an important time for the program," commented Schaus. "His mentorship, competition mindset, and understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest level, will position the team for continued success, and another opportunity to contend for an NCAA national championship."
