BURNABY, B.C. – Krysta Schaus has been named the permanent head coach of the Simon Fraser Red Leafs men's and women's golf teams.
This past season, Schaus served as the interim leader of Canada's only NCAA program and her coaching debut was a great success.
She guided the Red Leafs to the men's and women's team titles at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in April. It was one of three tournament triumphs — along with wins at Saint Martin's (Wash.) and Colorado State Pueblo — for the SFU women's team, which tied the school record for most in a season.
In addition to the GNAC title, the Red Leafs men won their own True North Classic in September, finishing the campaign just off the single-season SFU record of three tournament victories.
"I'm thrilled to continue leading the SFU Men's and Women's Golf programs," said Schaus. "This past season was a special one, and with the depth of our returning players and the strength of our incoming class, I believe both teams have the momentum to reach new heights.
"I'm truly grateful to
Luc Simard and
Breanne Watson for their trust in me and their support of our golf programs. Their belief in what we're building allows us to continue striving for excellence both on and off the golf course"
For her achievements, Schaus' peers selected her the GNAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year and the Men's Golf co-Coach of the Year.
"We're thrilled to remove Krysta's interim title and confirm her as Head Coach, Golf at Simon Fraser University," said
Breanne Watson, SFU's Associate Director, Athletics. "Krysta is not only knowledgeable about the game, but is goal-driven and patient. This is displayed by her successes both on and off the course. After an impressive season by both men's and women's teams, we look forward to continued success with Krysta at the helm."

Schaus has the right building blocks to make SFU golf even better.
Sophomore Dana Smith won the 2025 GNAC Player of the Year award while Max Corcoran earned the conference's Freshman of the Year honour. The Red Leafs had 11 All-Conference players (six women and five men). Between the two championship teams, every player except one, including redshirt Liam Jackes, is eligible to return next season. Schaus has also had an impressive year on the recruiting trail, signing five new players to compete for the Red Leafs beginning in the fall.
Schaus joined SFU in October 2023 as the golf program's full-time assistant coach. The Red Leafs women won the GNAC championship later that season with a two-round total of 596, breaking their own conference tournament scoring record. SFU also swept the 2023-24 GNAC Player of the Year (Michael Crisologo and Meera Minhas) and Freshman of the Year (Denby Carswell and Dana Smith) awards.
Prior to moving West, Schaus was an Associate Professional at the Toronto Golf Club, where she earned the Professional Golfers' Association of Canada's Moe Norman Apprentice Professional of the Year Award in 2020.
Originally from Fredericton, N.B., Schaus excelled as a player at NCAA Division II Erskine College in Due West, S.C. She won four tournaments individually over her collegiate career, which was capped off with Conference Carolinas Player of the Year recognition at the end of her senior season in 2016.
Her journey into coaching brought her to Gardner-Webb University, an NCAA Div. I school in Boiling Springs, N.C. As an assistant coach from 2016 to 2018, Schaus helped both Runnin' Bulldogs' teams record their best Big South Conference championship results since 2011.
Schaus holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from Erskine, and a Master of Business Administration – Marketing degree from Gardner-Webb.
